Silver NAHQ Association of Excellence AwardThe Mississippi Association for Healthcare Quality wins the Silver NAHQ Association of Excellence Award in its very first attempt ever at the award process. Awarded October 3, 2010, Kansas City, Missouri.
Healthcare Quality Leader of the YearJohn W. Pace, MsAHQ President 2009-2010 and Mississippi State Hospital Patient Advocate was the unanimous choice for the Inaugural MsAHQ Healthcare Quality Leader of the Year. During the same period of time John lead MsAHQ to its strongest point ever, including the 2010 NAHQ Silver Association of Excellence Award, he also took Employee of the Month Honors at the Mississippi State Hospital. Awarded October 29, 2010, Hattiesburg, MS.
Inaugural Class of Lifetime Membership RecipientJoellen Murphree has a BSN from the University of Tennessee (1970), worked at Vanderbilt University in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit for 3 years, taught in the AA program at Belmont University for one year, worked in Home Health Hospice both in Nashville and Tupelo, worked at North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) for 20 years: oncology for 2 years and Quality Management for 18 years. Her years in Quality included Nursing Performance Improvement, Hospital-wide Performance Improvement, Director of a department combining Performance Improvement, Social Work and Case Management, and her last role with NMMC was as Patient Safety Officer. She is certified in Health care Quality and Case Management and is a Six Sigma Black Belt. She became a member of MsAHQ in 1990 and took an office immediately. She served on the Board almost every one of her 18 years in Quality Management. She served as President 3 terms with corresponding President-Elect roles preceding, Secretary and Treasurer (those roles were combined at times) for 4 terms, Education Chair at least 3 terms and Membership Chair for 5 terms. Accomplishments included leading an all day workshop to create MsAHQ Roles and Responsibilities Grid, setting up the use of an Administrative Assistant, and getting the association incorporated as a tax-free educational organization.
Inaugural Class of Lifetime Membership RecipientMary Jo Hart was born and raised in Billings, Montana. She became an R.N. there in June of 1969. For approximately thirty of those years, her work was related directly to healthcare quality. She has worked with hospital-wide quality, medical staff quality, infection control, risk management, and state licensure and certification. She became involved with the very early state healthcare quality group in 1976. This group later evolved into the current MsAHQ. She also became a certified professional in healthcare quality (CPHQ) in January, 1996. She maintained her membership in MsAHQ for many years, serving as Secretary, Treasurer and then as President 2001-2002. She has always striven to promote the optimal level of healthcare quality for all patients. Mary Jo retired in early 2007 and resides with her husband, Tom, near Morton, Mississippi.
Inaugural Class of Lifetime Membership RecipientToni Layer has worked in Quality Management /Performance Improvement since 1988 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi and at the Veterans Affairs Integrated Network (VISN) office. Initially, she was involved in developing a quality management program at the Medical Center. Later in her career, while with the VISN office, she worked with 10 medical centers, multiple outpatient areas, and 7 nursing homes over a 5 state area. Additionally, she was involved with national VA reviews and meetings. Specifically, she completed reviews that used the Malcolm Baldrige criteria for VA medical centers and VISNs within the VA. Utilizing experience with the Baldrige criteria, she also served as a Reviewer for several years with the Mississippi Quality Award program and as a Judge for 3 years. She became involved with the very early state health care quality group in 1976. This group later evolved into the current MsAHQ. She also became a certified professional in health care quality (CPHQ) in January, 1996. She maintained her membership in MsAHQ for many years, serving as Secretary, Treasurer and then as President 2001-2002. Inaugural Class of Lifetime Membership RecipientJack Goff,RN, Director, Accreditation & PI, North Mississippi Health Services, Tupelo, Mississippi. Jack began working at North Mississippi Medical Center in 1967 and has been with the organization for over 42 years. Roles he held during this time were: Surgery Supervisor, Director of Surgery, Director of Accreditation, Case Management, and Social Work. At the time of his retirement from MsAHQ, he held the position of Director of Accreditation & Performance Improvement. One of the founding members of MsAHQ, he helped in developing the MsAHQ Charter and through the process of "Incorporation". He held numerous positions within MsAHQ including the position of MsAHQ President for two terms.
MsAHQ Establishes the Vickie Gerrard CPHQ GrantThe MsAHQ CPHQ Grant was created to honor Vickie Gerrard and her many contributions to MsAHQ, its members, and to the healthcare quality community. Over her distinguished career, Vickie Gerrard has been devoted to promoting ongoing education for healthcare quality professionals. A charter member of MsAHQ, she served as President three terms, Education Chair, Historian, and remained a member of the Board for over ten years. In recognition of her many contributions, lifelong love of learning, and in honor of her ongoing commitment to healthcare quality, the Vickie Gerrard CPHQ Grant was established October 29, 2010.
